Software Developer & Data Engineer

The organisation

WEC Lines is a dynamic medium-sized maritime transport organisation specialising in container transport. Our services focus primarily on the United Kingdom, Portugal, Spain, the Canary Islands and North and East Africa. Our head office is located in Rotterdam. We also have offices in Hamburg, Le Havre, Antwerp, Barcelona, Nairobi and Mombasa, among others.

For our head office in Rotterdam, we are looking for an Software Developer & Data Engineer.

The role

The Software Developer & Data Engineer is responsible for designing, building, maintaining and improving the organisation’s two core software platforms. The role supports end users, integrates data, develops Power BI solutions and plays a key role in the further digitization of the organisation. This position is crucial in translating business processes, SOPs and user needs into stable, scalable and future-proof software solutions.

Your key responsibilities

1. Software development

  • Develop, expand and maintain the two core software platforms
  • Build new functionalities based on business and process requirements
  • Resolve bugs, performance issues and technical challenges
  • Document technical solutions

2. User support & application management

  • Support end users with questions, issues and system usage
  • Analyse incidents and implement structural solutions
  • Act as the technical point of contact within the organisation
  • Support releases, updates and system changes

3. Data integration & architecture

  • Design and maintain data flows between systems
  • Integrate software platforms with databases, APIs and external suppliers
  • Ensure data quality, performance and reliability

4. Power BI & data modelling

  • Develop and maintain Power BI data models
  • Build reports and dashboards
  • Create DAX measures for KPIs and business logic
  • Support end users with data, analysis and reporting

5. Digitization & process automation

  • Translate processes and SOPs into software functionality
  • Automate manual and error-prone processes
  • Contribute to further digitization and scalability of the organisation

6. AI & Smart automation

  • Apply AI tools and technologies to improve processes, data processing and user support
  • Explore and implement AI solutions such as process automation, data enrichment, forecasting and chatbots or self-service tools
  • Contribute ideas on how AI can enhance software and business processes

7. Collaboration with business & suppliers

  • Align with Business Process Managers, agencies and external suppliers
  • Provide technical input for improvements and new initiatives
  • Support implementations at agencies (including occasional travel if required)

What you bring

  • HBO/WO degree in IT, Software Engineering, Computer Science or similar
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience
  • Experience in an operational or international environment is a plus
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Independent, responsible and proactive
  • Able to communicate effectively with non-technical users
  • Structured, accurate and focused on continuous improvement

Knowledge & skills

  • Required – Software & Data
    • Experience with software development (e.g. C#, .NET, Java, Python or similar
    • Experience with databases and data modelling (SQL)
    • Experience with APIs, EDI and system integrations
    • Knowledge of cloud or server environments
  • Required – Data & Reporting
    • Power BI
    • Data modelling
    • DAX
    • Data quality management
  • Preferred – AI & Innovation
    • Experience with AI tools or platforms (e.g. Azure AI, OpenAI, Copilot, ML services, RPA or similar)
    • Interest in applying AI to business processes, data analysis and software development
