Upcoming changes: ETS & Fuel EU Maritime implementation

Please be advised about the 2025 introduction of the Fuel EU Maritime regulations and enhancement of the European Union Emissions Trading System (ETS).

These new regulations will have significant impacts on our operations and, consequently, on the services we provide to you.

EU Emission Trading System (ETS)

As from January 1st, 2025, the second phase of the ETS will commence, which will include an increased coverage of emissions from 40% to 70%, ultimately increasing to 100% in 2026. For more information, please visit this page.

Fuel EU Maritime

In addition to the ETS, starting January 1st, 2025, the Fuel EU Maritime regulation will be applied. This is part of the ‘Fit for 55’ package to reduce greenhouse emissions by 55% by 2030. This regulation mandates a 2% GHG intensity reduction applied on all vessels calling European ports and will gradually build up to an 80% reduction by 2050.

The Fuel EU Maritime Regulation requires shipping lines to transition to renewable and low-carbon fuels, adopt energy-efficient technologies, and ensure compliance through monitoring and reporting, driving significant operational changes and costs to meet stricter GHG emission limits starting in 2025.

Surcharge simplification: Green house gas surcharge (GHG)

To simplify the implementation of these surcharges for our customers, WEC Lines will combine the ETS and Fuel EU Maritime into one GHG Surcharge. This ensures you, as our customer, will only be charged once for both elements.

As from January 1st, 2025, WEC Lines will start charging the GHG surcharge for our Intra European services between all EU ports.
